A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT DIGBY COTTAGE
Digby Cottage is a Grade II listed building, originally a
single farmhouse called Brookside Cottage before it was split. It was surrounded by 23 acres and first appeared on a map in
approximately 1790.
In 1814 it was leased by the Rev. Noel Digby, Rector of Brighstone
(hence the name Digby Cottage) for a trust to be used as a Charity School. In 1817, it was occupied by a Schoolmaster and
his wife, where they taught the children of Brighstone (at that time named Brixton). They were allowed to take fee-paying
pupils above the 20 children provided for. It was noted in 1825 that it was also to educate the children of Motttistone. On
completion of the new school, the ‘Admiralty’ took over the property and it was used as the coastguard’s
cottage and the watch-room.
In the 1920’s the property was sold off by which time
it had been converted into 2 cottages.
